Nowadays in almost any choral performance the singers in the choir far outnumber the players in the orchestra. This was not so during the lives of the composers of these works, and it is really due to the growth of numbers in the modern choirs that sing them. The last performance of the “ Messiah ” in London under Handel’s direction was given by a chorus of twenty-three, and an orchestra of thirty-three. Bach’s choir in St Thomas’s, Leipsig, for which he wrote his “ Passions ” and cantatas, numbered twelve, three to each part.
