Earthquake Work Earns High Praise. HONOUR FOR TARANAKI. The bridge deck of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s motor vessel Taranaki, now at Lyttelton, was crowded yesterday afternoon, when officials of the Navy League and others, including officers and men of the ship, gathered on the occasion of the presentation of a tablet in recognition of the part the ship’s company played in the Hawke’s Bay earthquake. Among those present were: The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) and Mrs Sullivan, the Town Clerk (Mr J. S. Neville) and Mrs Neville, the Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr F. E. Sutton) and Mrs Sutton, Mr J. J. Dougall (Dominion president of the Navy League), Mr C. J. Treleaven (secretary of the local branch of the league), Lieutenant-Com-mander C. H. Kersley (executive officer of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve), Lieutenant-Commander H. A. Rhind (R.N.V.R.), Captain A. J. Charman (marine superintendent of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Compahy) and Mr R. Darroch (Dominion secretary of the Navy League). Mr Dougall, in making the presentation, congratulated the commander of the Taranaki (Captain C. Wood) and his officers and men on the fine work they had done in Napier during the earthquake in February last. They had performed an excellent duty which proved that the British sailor was a handy man. Captain Charman, on behalf of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, thanked the officials of the Navy League for. their presentation. The ship was no good without a leader, he said, and he had to thank Captain Wood.” “ I want to thank you for this fine presentation,” said Captain Wood. “ My men did not do much, but I did what I thought best.”
