CONTROL OF RADIO.
No Decision yet on Renewal of License. RUMOUR DENIED. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, October 1. An official denial was given to-day to the statement made public during the day that the Radio Broadcasting Company of New Zealand was to be granted a renewal of its license for a further five years. It is quite clear that no such decision has been reached as the future of broadcasting in New Zealand has not yet been considered by the new Coalition Cabinet. The license granted by the Government to the Broadcasting Company for a period of five years will expire at the end of the present year. The intention of the United Government had been to transfer the control of broadcasting in the Dominion to a board to be set up under the Broadcasting Bill, now before Parliament. This Bill had been read a first time in the House of Representatives and was awaiting its second reading when the setting up of the Economic Committee blocked further progress. In view of the statement that the company’s license was to be renewed, assurances were given this evening that no such decision had been made.
