TRACK GALLOPS AT RICCARTON.

Morning’s Work Provides Nothing Outstanding.

Thursday. The conditions were pleasant for training operations at Riccarton this morning but the work did not provide a great deal of excitement. The outside of the trial grass was open, but many of the horses were given only useful pace work on the sand or the plough. Chief interest was provided by the candidates for Kurow, all of whom were given sprinting tasks. P. V. Mason was out early but restricted Jaloux and Azalia to steady pacing on the plough. Riri, with Iloa as a mate for the fast five furlongs, covered a mile and a quarter in 2min 13sec. He went at a sound pace throughout and finished on well. The Cup horse is going on well in his preparation. Cricket Bat, with Ball Dress to bring him home over the last four and a halt, covered seven furlongs in lmin 30 l-ssec. He is going on nicely in his preparation for the Dunedin Guineas, which will be his next engagement. Owlsflight and Zeebrugge were given a working gallop over seven furlongs. Moorbird and Shatter sprinted half a mile in 50 3-ssec, Autumn Bird and Dunraven doing a little faster time. Sharp Thorn occupied 53sec for half a mile but did it easily. Paquito moved freely while registering lmin 55sec for a mile, without being exerted. Gustavo finished slightly in front of Tres Sec at the end of six furlongs, run in lmin 17 2-ssec. Fast Passage and Morepork sprinted half a mile in 50 2-ssec. Tarquinius and Nightguard ran half a mile up the back in 50sec, True Shaft and Water Polo going over the same, ground in 49 4-fisec. These four are in good order fer Kurow.

Tautbow went a mile comfortably in lmin 47 2-ssec. There was not much between Royal Love and Ramo at the end of a mile in lmin 46 2-ssec, the pace being even throughout. These two look very well after their recent racing. Night Flyer and Sol wit took 50sec for half a mile up the back, with Solwit slightly the better of the pair. Adelphi was a neck in front of Gay Crest at the end of six furlongs, run in lmin lßsec. They are in excellent condition for coming engagements. Red Heckle and Waiwene sprinted half a mile along the back in 49 4-ssec, showing plenty of dash. Metal Bird and Knocklong occupied 50 2-ssec for the last four of five furlongs, and finished well. Palace and Charmeuse registered 49 2-ssec for half a mile along the back, a smart gallop. Starshooter took lmin 20 2-ssec to run six furlongs but was going well at the end. He is in nice fettle for his Kurow Cup engagement. Convoy and Taku Tama were associated in a useful working gallop. Royal Baby occupied lmin ssec for five furlongs, doing the last half-mile in 51 2-ssec. She is in good order but she is not a brilliant worker by herself. Locksley and Chief Light ran half a mile up the back in 50sec. Compris was not bustled in his work, taking 56sec for a very easy half-mile. It is practically certain that he will not go to Australia. High Bank and the Last Dart—Boadicea youngster sprinted three furlongs. Maurena (I. Tilson) jumped two pony hurdles and then went over two of the bigger obstacles. He gave a promising display, though he ran about at each flight.
