SEARCH CONTINUES.

Student Missing on Mount Ruapehu. PARTY ASKS FOR ROPES. (Special to the “ Star.”) THE CHATEAU, September 2. Hour by hour a handful of people wait anxiously in The Chateau, hoping against hope that Warwick Stanton, the missing climber, will be found; but as the time passes and no word comes from the fifty searchers who are hacking their way through the bush, the atmosphere becomes all the more tense. Bushmen who know the country thoroughly are led by Mr Mannering, of Taumarunui, an expert in these matters. Although a message came to The early this morning asking for >opes, it was not accompanied by word saying that Stanton had been found. Last night the theory was that he had slipped down a 400 ft cliff. Footmarks were found leading to a cliff, and slip marks were found on the edge. This morning Addis gives a more coherent and complete story. He said that when he left Stanton at three o’clock on Sunday afternoon Stanton was just about all in. He was delirious, and several times fell down and lay motionless. Each time Addis pulled his comrade to his feet and on they staggered. Addis said that when he left Stanton he was on the verge of collapse. He pushed on as hard as he could, in the hope that he would get help for Stanton in time. All at The Chateau are full of admiration for the wonderful pluck shown by Addis. This morning Dr Welby Fisher was relieved by Dr Ritchie, of Taumarunui. All the climbers are reported to be bright and well. A party of nine returned to the Chateau at two o’clock. They had no encouraging news. Mr Warwick Stanton is a law student at the Auckland University College. He has some mountain experience, having made excursions to Mount Cook when he was at the Waitaki Boys’ High School.
