MIRACULOUS ESCAPE
Train Smashes into Van at Khandallah. MOTOR DRIVER HURT. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, August 26. Escaping miraculously from a railway engine which collided with a motor van he was driving at a crossing to the north of Khandallah railway station this afternoon, William Green, of Johnsonville, suffered nothing more serious than cuts. The van was considerably damaged, a portion being thrown on to the Khandallah railway station. The motor van, which is owned by Mr S. F. Beaumont, baker, Johnsonville, had reached the crossing and was on the rails when its engine stalled. The train which had left Johnsonville for Wellington at 4.49 p.m., and was nearing Khandallah station, crashed into the van, pushing the vehicle forward a distance of about thirty yards. The front wheels became separated from the body of the car and were tossed on to the station platform, damaging one of the seats there.
Green suffered only cuts about the face, and after receiving medical attention, was taken home.
