“CONTROL TAXIS.”
Auckland Companies Tired of Fare-cutting. REQUEST TO BOARD. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, August 25. Representatives of the three largest taxi companies in Auckland waited on the Transport Board to-day and asked the board to assume control of all taxis, fix maximum and minimum fares, and restrict the number of taxis operating. They alleged that drivers were working all hours and that many had been found asleep in their cabs through fatigue. It was contended that the public should be safeguarded. There are 370 cabs licensed in Auckland and the deputation represented 200. The board set up a committee to report. One member’s suggestion that no action should be taken found no supporter. The taxi company’s request follows the renewal of the fare-cutting war announced at the end of last week.
