SLOAN MORPETH LOSES.
Amateur Golf Championship of Victoria. (Special to the “ Star.**) MELBOURNE, August 9. Sloan Morpeth, the ex-New Zealand golf champion, reached the quarter-final of the V’ictorian amateur championship. Commenting upon his defeat in this round by Dalrymple, a critic says:— The match in which Dalrymple defeated Morpeth at the 37th was a great struggle, out of which the Commonwealth player might have emerged with the laurels only for weakness on the greens. Dalrymple, w’ith a first round of 77, stood one up at lunch time, and he was still one up at the 27th, each having 41 for the out journey. All square was called w'hen Dalrymple bunkered his 13th tee shot, but Morpeth, missing a tiny putt at the 15th. fell behind again, only to lead once more by virtue of a superb iron to within 4ft of the ne„vt flag. Then he missed a ridiculously easy putt after hitting two “screamers” to the 17th and approaching well. Good drives to the home hole were followed by seconds which clearly showed how the strain was telling. Dalrymple topped his and the other was sliced to the vicinity of the flagstaff away on the right. Morpeth made a good recovery to the green, but Dalrymple was through with his pitch into long grass, but from there his beautifully controlled chip almost holed out. Morpeth now had a ten-footer for the match, but he missed it and away they went to the 37th. Dalrymple had the better drive, and, following it with another choice little chip, the hole was his with a three. Morpeth was short with his pitch and took three putts.
