N.Z.’S POSITION.

No Three Years’ Economic Plan. MR FORBES’S VIEW. (Special to the "Star.") WELLINGTON. August 25. Current suggestions that he is formulating a three years’ economic plan for the rehabilitation of New Zealand were discounted by Mr Forbes in an interview with a “ Star ” representative today. Mr Forbes stated definitely that he had not indicated any fifccd plan. His view was that if correct steps were taken now, other matters would right themselves as a consequence. “ We have next year’s finances to look to,” he added. “ Having used our reserves this year, we have to make provision to cover the future and it must l>e remembered that any economies decided upon would take some time to be brought into operation, and for the effect of them to l>e felt. This requires some planning, but I have not stated that there will l>e any fixed period." As foreshadowed yesterday, Professor Copland, whose name has been freely mentioned in connection with the deliberations of the inter-party conference, will not be one of the expert witnesses called l>efore that body. The visiting economist called on the party leaders this morning to bid them farewell prior to his departure for Sydney by the Maunganui at 4 p.m. to-day. In a brief interview with a “Star” representative, Professor Copland said that he had enjoyed his stay in New Zealand and his only regret was that it had hot been of longer duration. In reply to a question, he said that he had not heard of any proposal that he should give evidence before the inter-party conference.
