TUBERCULAR MAORIS.
Numbers are Suffering in Franklin District. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, August 19. “ The Health Department’s inspector is of the opinion that 75 per cent of the Maoris in the Franklin district are suffering from tuberculosis owing to the conditions under which they are living,” said Mr Parvin, member for Franklin on the Auckland Hospital Board. He added that the living conditions of the Franklin Maoris were as bad as those at Mangere. In one shed, Bft by 10ft, built of kerosene cases, eight persons were living. They paid 2s 6d a week as rent. A few days ago a baby was born there. Mr Wallace, chairman of the board, said that six Maori T.B. cases from Franklin had been sent to the hospital, and he believed that there were many
more not receiving proper attention. Special provision should be made by the Native Department for indigent Maori hospital cases. Dr Hughes, M. lical Officer of Health, said that conditions in the Franklin district were a good deal worse than those at Mangere.
