R.N.V.R. DANCE.

Canterbury Division Entertains Guests. TRUE NAVAL ATMOSPHERE. The hospitality of the Navy is well .known throughout the British Empire, and even in Christchurch, which cannot lay claim to being a seaport town, this tradition is very much in evidence. The absence of a warship in port does not prevent the members of the Canterbury Division of the R.N.V.R. from ! entertaining their friends in true naval style, for they have fitted up their j headquarters in St Asaph Street to re- j present the upper decks of a training ship, and it was there that Commander A. D. Boyle and the wardroom officers entertained a number of their friends at a dance on Saturday night. In addition to their city friends there were also present visitors who have been in Christchurch for the Grand National week festivities, and representatives of the Army and the Air Force. In addition to the naval atmosphere created by the realistic fittings of the “deck,” which was complete with “ bridge,” large gun and much beautifully burnished brasswork, a festive note had been given by a canopy of multi-coloured streamers, fringes and rose-coloured shades over the lights, and the lavish use of signal flags. Seymour’s Orchestra supplied the music for the dancing. The proceeds from the dance were in aid of the funds of the training cutter Deveron. Among those present were:—Commander A. D. Boyle, Lieutenant-Com-mander C. H. Kerslev and Mrs Kersley. Lieutenant-Commander 11. A. Rhind and Mrs Rhind, Lieutenants C. Wilson, R. Newman and F. G. Tidswell, Sur-geon-Lieutenant J. K.
