ROUND THE SUBURBS

Papanui Pound Schema. The Papanui Pound Scheme, which is really a Waimairi School district affair, is one of the most successful in Christchurch. It was organised by a sub-committee of the Waimairi School Committee. Mesdames S. Smith and Merrin and Messrs Haynes and Drury. The bulk of the work falls on Messrs Haynes and Drury, who put in all day Saturday organising and packing. Car owners go out with the local Boy Scouts. Those who have assisted arc Mrs J. Freeman, Mr R. Morgan, Rev W. H. Orbell, Mr C. Wilkins, Mr Brown, Mrs Twentyman. Miss Church and Commissioner Rich. A special word should be said for the boys of the Scout troop, who put in many hours of hard work, and for Mr Musgrove, who has carried all the goods into town without cost to the organisers. Contributions are still coming in well. Butter and oatmeal are plentiful, but, strange to say, although Papanui is the centre of a> fruit and vegetablegrowing district, few apples, potatoes and vegetables have been received. Last week, however, Mr W. H. Marshall, an ex-Papanui farmer, gave a tm of potatoes. There is room for more workers of a Saturday morning, especially those with cars. :: Papanui Beautifying Work. Mr Walter undertook to ascertain if a small retaining wall could be made to prevent the sides of the drain from falling in. Mr Barnett made suggestions for the lay-out of the frontage, and the members of the Beautifying Association present promised to try to arrange for the planting of the street side of the creek. Afterwards Mr Barnett accompanied Messrs Sturrock and Tillman and inspected the subway at Belvue Avenue, and the end of St John Street. A scheme was proposed for the beautifying of these areas. « Papanui Sports Club.
