Charlie Chaplin, who still rates as the world’s greatest comedian, despite the fact that his medium is silent pictures, may produce a talking picture in which he plays the role of a deaf and dumb man! This statement was gleaned from Pola Negri during an interview. Pola Negri, formerly engaged to Charlie Chaplin, is still his warm friend and admirer. “ I met Charlie for a couple of hours before I left for Europe. We discussed the future of the ‘ talkies,’ just coming in. and even then we both agreed that the day of the talking picture was at hand. It was then that his face lighted with that fascinating smile of his, and he told me of his idea. When I heard of ‘ City Lights ’ I thought it would be that sort of picture—that he would appear as a deaf and dumb man in the midst of the talkers.”
