Though often attributed to Solomon, the saying, “ Spare the rod and spoil the child ” was not uttered by him. It occurs in a poem written by Samuel Butler. In the Book of Proverbs, however, there is the phrase “ He that spareth his rod hateth his son.” Perhaps that is where Butler obtained his inspiration.
