WITHDRAWAL REFUSED.
Magistrate Deals With Levy Defaulter. (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, August 14. Last Friday, when Mr Grieve, representing the Labour Department, informed Mr Hunt, S.M., that he was instructed to ask that a charge of nonpayment of unemployment levy against George Fowler Allen be withdraw*, the Magistrate objected and adjourned the case until this morning. Allen, a salesman, made a statement to a constable that he was unable to pay the levy. He had to send his wife to stay with relatives in Australia. “Tf he could send his wife to Australia he can afford to pay the levy,” remarked Mr Hunt. This morning Mr Grieve said there were no special circumstances why the charge should be withdrawn. Allen had not paid the December or March levies. The Magistrate imposed a fine of £l. “ When an information has been sworn in this Court I’m not going to allow the case to be withdrawn at the sweet will of an officer of any Government department,” he said.
