ROAD BREAKING MACHINE.

Operation Interests High Street Crowds. A petrol-driven road-breaking machine which was used in High Street today for opening up a trench for a new main being laid by the Gas Company proved a great source of interest to the crowds of passers-by. The machine is the first of its kind to be used in Christchurch and it is a comparatively •*©- cent innovation necessitated by the modern methods of road construction. Operated by one man, the machine can be used either for ramming material in newly-filled trenches or for breaking up hard concrete or tarred macadam road surfaces. The motor operates a hammer and when used for breaking through a hard surface it has the effect of driving a sharp wedge into the ground. Without this machine the task of removing the surface of the road would be hard and laborious if carried out by the use of ordinary picks. The new main which is being laid bv the Gas Company in High Street is part of the reconstruction scheme, the object being to avoid the necessity of breaking the surface of the road when the permanent pavement is put down.
