NEW GOLD REEF FOUND.
Promising Stone Discovered by Maoris. Per Press Association. THAMES, August 14. On Thursday, Maori claim-holders, who have been putting in levels at the Kaka claim at Tapu, were successful in cutting an entirely new reef and obr taining a considerable quantity of picked stone. Nearly a specimen ton of stone was crushed with primitive appliances and yielded one ounce three pennyweights, valued at £3 17s 6d an ounce. The Maoris will not allow anyone on the claim, but state that the stone looks more promising as the drive progresses. At the rear of this claim, a Taranaki syndicate, putting in a level, discovered a reef about fourteen feet wide. A ton of this crushed yielded seventeen pennyweights. Some of the stone was exhibited in Thames and experienced miners say that it is particularly good.
