WILL ASSIST POLICE.
Prisoner Makes Unusual Offer.
RECOVERY OF GOODS. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, August 14. The unusual request that before being sentenced he should be given an opportunity of trying to' recdver some of the stolen property was made to Judge Kennedy by William Newton, who appeared for sentence on a charge of breaking and entering. Newton was concerned in a sensational robbery at Dawson’s from which jewellery valued at £3OOO was stolen. Accused’s mate, Wilson, was previously sentenced to four years’ imprisonment in connection with the same offence. Newton said that he would assist the police in endeavouring to recover some of the stolen property. It was rather a difficult task, but he thought he could recover some.
The judge deferred passing sentence till August 29.
