“NOT WANTED HERE.”
Defaulting English Youth to be Sent Home. (Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, August 14. Charles Montague Pearce, a farm hand, aged eighteen, appeared before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., on a charge of stealing a signet ring and engagement ring, of the total value of £25. Mr Aekins represented accused, who pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said accused was an English public schoolboy and came to New Zealand on June 6, 1929. He worked on farms in the North Island and last month was dismissed by a farmer at Ngaruawahia. Before he left, he went into a bedroom and stole the two rings, one of which he pledged for 10s and the'other for 4s. He then sold the pawn, ticket for 2s 6d. The initials were filed off the signet ring. Counsel said arrangements had been made by a church authority to have Pearce sent back to England, where his Slather was in a comfortable position. Restitution could be made forthwith, and Pearce would leave by the Rangitata from Wellington next Saturday. -‘ Would your Worship adjourn this case for a month, instead of sending him back home a convicted thief?” asked Mr Aekins. “ Well, yes, I will do that, on the understanding that he goes on Saturday,” said Mr Hunt. “ He’s not wanted here.”
