HARRIERS.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. CROSS-COUNTEY CHAMPIONSHIP. A record field of eighty-five runners will compete in the Canterbury provincial cross-country championship to be held over the 10,000 metres course at Cashmere to-morrow, when the Christchurch, Anglican, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Ttmaru and Varsity Harrier Clubs will be represented. Three championships, the inter-club teams’ race for the Inter-Club Harrier Challenge Cup, the senior provincial cross-country championship, and the junior provincial cross-country championship for the Kesteven Cup, will be decided in conjunction. The teams’ championship is held |by the Christchurch Club, the senior championship by A. D # Park (Baptist) and the Junior championship by G. H. Watson (Christchurch). Teams' Champions hip.

The Christchurch Club, holders of the teams’ championship, has a strong team in the field to defend the InterClub Harrier Challenge Cup, which is has held for a number of years. The team is a solid, well-balanced combination and, although it is unlikely to put up a record score, the team appears to he strong enough to beat its opponents. Timaru have three sound men to lead their team, but the fourth runner is more or less unknown. This team reads as well as any other than the Christchurch Club’s team. The remaining teams are more or less mediocre, but for a second team the Christchurch No. 2 team is a good one and it should do well. Individual Prospects. The holder of the championship. A. D. Park, will defend his title, while R. M. Barrer and G. H. Watson, who were second and third respectively last season, will also be in to-morrow’s field. Barrer has done well this winter and on paper appears to have the best prospects of success, with Watson and Park next in order. A. D. Kane (Timaru), however, is a first-class man who was undoubtedly the best cross-country man in Canterbury two or three years ago, when running with the Kaiapoi Club. He has been running well in Timaru this winter and his success would occasion no surprise. Kane is a really good man and is certain to be well placed at the finish. J. W. Shepherd (Christchurch) and J. Eaton (Timaru) have hardly lived up to their reputations this season, but each appears to be getting back to his best and should run prominently. H. J. Taylor (Timaru) has beaten Eaton recently and his form will be watched with interest. The struggle for first place will probably be fought out between Barrer, Kane, Watson and Park, but an equally keen struggle will be seen between Shepherd, Eaton, Taylor. J. D. Pascoe (Christchurch) and one or two others for the minor places. Junior Championship. G. H. Watson is now over the age limit for the junior championship and will not be able to defend his title. A number of the clubs have not indicated their juniors, so that prospects for tomorrow’s race are at present obscure. Possibilities are G. S. Harrison (Bantist), W. Coburn (Christchurch) and O. Savage (Anglican). Timaru Visitors. The Timaru competitors will arrive in Christchurch by the Dunedin express this evening and will be billeted out among the local runners. One or two of the visitors have yet to be accommodated, and anyone who is able to billet a visitor is asked to get into immediate touch with the secretary of his club or the secretary of the Canterbury Centre. The visitors will return by the night express on Sunday. vt « Baptist Club. A. D. Park is expected to retain the Canterbury championship to-morrow. His time over the course a fortnight ago compare*? favourably with that put un by the first three members of the Christchurch Club who raced over the whole distance. Park was hot extended at any time during the race, his nearest competitor being C. F. Jones, who finished 2J.min behind. It Is expected that Park will din off several minute:: from his time of Saturday fortnle-ht. C* F Jones fk expected to he the next member of the club to finish. Jones has shown much, improvement lately and it 5 s hoped that he will be on form. C W. Bell has improved his style and should he cln c e un at the finish J Walton. B. M’lner and C. M. Dawson are all capable of giving good accounts of themselves. Entries for Championship at Cashmere To-morrow.
