Sportsmen and others who travel to Christchurch on race days from Timaru and intervening stations up to Ashburton have long been of the opinion that the excursion trains leave Christchurch too late. In order to ascertain the feeling of passengers, an inspector boarded the train on the evening of the Grand National and made inquiries whether leaving Christchurch at 730 p.m. was suitable, or if an improvement would be made if the train left earlier. It is understood that a majority of the passengers were in favour of an earlier departure. The inspector took a note of this and the matter will be brought under the notice of the Railway Department for consideration.
