Thirty-seven years have been added to the average lifetime of man in the last 400 years and thirteen of the years have been gained in the last thirty years. In the Magistrate’s Court this morning Mary Joyce, aged sixty-six, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment on a charge of being idle and disorderly, in that she had insufficient lawful visible means of support. Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., was on the bench.
“ I put an advertisement for a boy in last Saturday night’s ‘ Star ’ and I got over a hundred replies,” said Mr R. B. Owen at last night’s meeting of the executive of the Port Christchurch League. He added that that experience made him think need for doing something to work for the boys and girls leaving school, 'it seemed to him that the Port Christchurch scheme was absolutely necessary to ensure that employment would be available for these boys and girls. Without Port Christchurch in the future he did not know what would happen to them.
