In the business recorded at the Stock Exchange this morning the banking section did not secure its usual share, and at the fresh bidding there was again a quiet tone. Quotations showed little alteration, but English and Scottish were offered 2s cheaper at 78s. Loan and Mercantile scrip was offered at 10s lower, £47 10s, but a buyer dropped back to £43. After a sale of Moturoa Oils yesterday at 6s, the highest bidder stopped at ss. A buyer came* in for Wellington Woollen at 82s 6d. In Government Stocks, a parcel of 4J per cents was on offer at £IOO ss, and one of . Inscribed at par. MINING. (Special to the “ Star.”) DUNEDIN, August 13. : The Golden Progress mine from May ! 2 to July 30 has won 655 ounces* of j gold of an approximate value of £2620. The mine is still crushing quarts of 1 high value.
OKABITO DREDGE. Advice received from Okarilo FiveMile Beach Gold Dredging Co., Ltd., under date August 11. stated that there would be no published return this week as the dredge. w;ls stopped for practically the whole of last week while a section of the main pipe line, was dismantled and re-laid nearer the dredge paddock. During the stoppage certain minor repairs were carried out to the winches. A telegram received from the company’s engineer advises that the dredge started again this morning. CORNISH POINT GOLD MINE. Tn regard to the Cornish Point Gold Mines, Ltd., the following report from the mine has come to hand:—“Since wiring you in regard to cross-cutting, 1 have opened up in the main drive to prove the width of the gutter and have driven 4ft 6in north-west where the bottom started to rise. As we continued driving the bottom gradually rose to the top of the drive, there being no payable wash. 1 have now started driving ahead east and west. The bottom is starting to go flat and may take a dip, so I will carry on. The wash is looking a bit better.” LONDON TALLOW MARKET. The Bank of New Zealand has received the following advice from its London office, dated August 12:— Tallow.—The demand is poor.
