Mr J. Smail (Timaru) is a guest at Warner’s liotei. Messrs Robert Arlow, D. Scott and E. C. Ilartridge (Wellington J are staying at the United Service Hotel. Sir Thomas Sidey) leader of the Legislative Council, was a passenger by the ferry steamer this morning. Mr Julian Foster, American Trade Commissioner, was a passenger by the ferry steamer this morning. Messrs J. Roberts, S. K. Sleigh (Dunedin), J. A. C. Bayne and R. A. Allow were passengers by the ferry steamer this morning. Dr James Might, Rector of Canterbury College, left England yesterday on his return to New Zealand, via America. He is expected to arrive home about September 12. Word was received yesterdav that the Rev A. Selwyn Bean, M.A. (Oxon.), only son of Mr and Mrs Charles Bean, of this city, and now vicar of Astley, Manchester, had'gained his B.D. degree at the Man chest er* University. A distinguished anatomist, Professor William Wright, of London, will arrive in Wellington by the Monowai from Sydney on September 7, and after visiting various parts of the Dominion will leave Auckland for Vancouver on September 22. During his stay in Wellington he will be the guest of Sir Donald M’Gavin. At the meeting of the Council of the Canterbury Justices of the Peace Association, held last evening, the president, Mr A. H. Hobbs and members, expressed their congratulations to Mr P. R. Climie on his appointment to the Unemployment Board, and leave of al> sence from council meetings was extended to Mr Ciimie. Mr John Reid, principal of the South Otago High School, has resigned his position. Mr T. D. Pearce, ex-princi-pal of the Southland Boys’ High School, has been appointed relieving principal, and commences his duties immediately. Mr Reid, who was for many years a master at the Otago Boys’ High School, was not due for retirement until the end of this year, but, as injuries received by him in an accident recently made it advisable for him to have three months’ leave of absence, he forwarded his resignation. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Wool Brokers’ Association Mr A. E. Mabin, of Messrs Levin and Co., Wellington, was ele-ted president, and Mr J. B. Moodie, of Messrs Dalgety and Co., Wellington, vice-president, in succession to Mr W. C. Brydon, of the National Mortgage and Agency Co.. Christchurch, and Mr Tas. Maling, of Messrs Pyne, Gould, Guinness,' Ltd., Christchurch, who have held the offices of president and vice-president respectively for the last two years. The Rev W. Bower Black, of St Paul’s Presbyterian Church, has received a call from the congregation of St David’s Church, Auckland, which he is considering. Mr Black left for Wellington last evening to meet the representatives of St David’s Church who were to travel from Auckland. Mr Black has been with St Paul’s congregation in Christchurch for six and a half years, coming from Carterton. At present he holds the chairmanship of the Presbyterian Social Service Association and is a member of the St Andrew’s College Board of Governors. He is particularly interested in the Bible Class movement. Mr Black originallv studied for the 'aw and is the holder of an LL.B degree The nominations at Victoria College for Rhodes Scholarships are Messrs M. E. Mahoney and B. A. Paetz. Mr Mahoney, who has taken the LL.B. degree, is a senior Rugby footballer and holds a triple Victoria University College boxing Blue , and double New Zealand University boxing Blue. lie has rowed for Victoria. University College and the Star Boating Club, and nas represented both on numerous occasions. lie has taken a prominent part in the social life of Victoria Col:egc, and is secretary of the Student*’ Associsitirin. the Law Faculty Club, and •.he Boxing Club. Mr Paetz has an excellent scholastic record. lie is a representative junior footballer, has won his | cricket Blue, and taken an active part io athletics, shooting and tennis. Rabbi Solomon Katz, formerly of the Hebrew Institute at New Rochelle, arrived by the Niagara this week to take up his duties in Wellington, and he will be followed by Mrs Katz in six months’ time. The rabbi formerly server! in Auckland. He graduated in Lond* •n, and was ordained by the laic Dr Herman Adler, chief rabbi of the British Empire. After three years as rabbi in Coventry, England, he accepted 3 call to Beth Israel congregation in Auckland, with whom he remained from 19H till 1920 From Auckland he went it') America, and was rabbi to congregations in Montgomery and Birmingham. Alabama. From Alabama Rabbi Katz went to New Rochelle in September. 1928. There he remained until his resignation ir September last year. ___
