WAIMAIRI AFFAIRS.

Meeting of the County Council Held. The Waimairi County Council met last night; present—Messrs W. J. Walter (chairman). C. E. Cross, J. Cleland, F. Scott, C. W. Moore, W. G. Chapman, G. Gardiner, J. Liggins, T. O. Newnham and W. P. Spencer. A request was received from the Amalgamated Engineers’ Union asking that a deputation be received in favour c-f the restoration of the 10 per cent cut tlle coun cH’s electrical linesmen. Mr Chapman asked why the council’s time'should be wasted. Why should one section be treated differently to another? Mr Walter said that no harm would be done in hearing the deputation. On the motion of Mr Chapman it was decided not to receive the deputation. A request was received from the Christchurch Fire Board asking that the attention of consumers be called to the danger of leaving electric ovens, heaters and irons turned on while householders were away. The danger of allowing contractors to build timber into chimneys was also emphasised. It was decided to put a note on air electric light demands pointing out the danger. A letter from Mr H. Simpson, of Burnside Road, received by the Drainage Board was forwarded to the council. The letter complained of flooding by the widening of Ilam Road. Mr Cross said that if the county had caused the damage it must rectify it. The matter was left tc Mr Cross* and the foreman. A reply was received from the State Advances Department to the request for the revaluation of Northcote homes. The letter stated that the department was prepared to deal with any case of injustice. Mr Chapman said that one man had to pay £925 for a home not as good as another alongside where c.-nly £7 60 was asked. Mr Cross said that Mr Pritchard, of the department, would be in Christchurch soon and it was decided that a sub-committee meet the officer on the spot.
