BRILLIANT BALL.

Canterbury Officers Entertain Guests. POPULAR SOCIAL EVENT. The series of dances held during the winter months by the members of the Canterbury Officers’ Club reaches its zenith in the annual ball held during Grand National week. At the Caledonian Hall last night when this big social event took place, the scene was a gay and colourful one. The hall was tastefully decorated. Restful lounges were arranged under the gallery, which was transformed into a cool bower with palms and foliage. A canopy of red. white and blue streamers hung from the ceiling and while fringes of red and white streamers gave a softening effect to the brilliant lights. Fan-shaped streamers were arranged along the side walls, and between the windows red and"white roses were intermingled in large bunches of foliage and berries. The Union Jack flanked 'by the New Zealand ensigns on the stage, added effect to the military atmosphere. Pots of cinerarias, cyclamen and coleus interspersed amongst large palms and foliage gave a cool appearance to the platform. An Animated Scene. Seen from the gallery the ballroom beneath presented an entrancing picture. The scarlet, blue and gold of military uniforms and the azure blue of the Air Force introduced that % welcome splash of colour characteristic of regimental gatherings and the gay uniforms mingling with the beautiful frocks worn by the women produced an ever-changing picture of sparkling beauty. The Bailey-Marston Orchestra supolied the music.
