FORMER ALL BLACK DIES.
Played in the Early Nineties. A highly-respected resident of Orari, Mr David Taylor Stewart, died last week at his residence, “ Birchbanks,” Orari. The late Mr Stewart was born at Pigeon Bay fifty-nine years ago, and when he was only six months old his “parents shifted to Orari, where he spent the rest of his life. He attended first the Winchester School, and later the Orari School when it opened. In his early days Mr Stewart was a keen footballer and first played for the Waihi Club in 1888. He quickly won fame as a first-class footballer, playing in the early ’nineties in the All Black team against the New South Wales team in Christchurch. At different times he played for Temuka and United Clubs, his usual position being in the forwards, where he was one of the best men in South Canterbury, representing it on several occasions. The late Mr Stewart was also a keen supporter of the Presbyterian Church, joining up in his early days first with the Temuka Church and later with the Geraldine Presbyterian Church, where he became a member of the session.
