Soap Made From Flax Within recent years important research work has been taking place in regard to flax. It has long been known that New Zealand Flax possesses qualities of great importance to New Zealand economically if better methods of treating it were discovered. Due to the activities of a local company, Oonah Ltd., much headway has been made, and everything points to important developments in the flax industry. A demonstration of what has been done will be made in one of Hay's windows. Gloucester Street, from to-day until next Monday. From flax in its raw state will bt shown the excellent quality of the fibre produced by new and revolutionary methods. An example of materials made from the fibre w’ill also be shown. A feature of the Oonah method of treating flax is the use of the bye-pro-ducts—soap, ointment, artificial silk, and excellent cow fodder can l>e produced, and examples will be shown. This display is of particular interest to farmers as well as to city folk, in that it shows the possibility of an important New Zealand industry. 15,000 STRONG. It is fitting that during this week when so many country visitors are in town, that Hay’s Limited should devote one of their windows to “ Hay’s League.** This movement, which has for its objective, the fostering of New Zealand-made goods, was started a little over a year ago, and has steadily grown in popularity. The window shows the various activities connected with the League, and the movement, because of its patriotic ideals, makes a strong appeal to children and adults alike Special concessions are granted to members of Hay’s League, all of which are outlined in the window display. HOW CAVE MEN LIVED. In connection with the “ Use More Wool Campaign ” Hay’s Limited are co-operating with other Retail Stores in the City by having devoted a window linking up with the story of the evolution of wool. Hay’s window is in the form of a Cave, and two young New Zealanders dressed in skins amuse the passersby with what boys did in those ancient times l>efore wool was thought of. A WIDE AWAKE STORE. In addition to the activities enumerated above, other entertaining events will take place at Hay’s this week. Millinery will be shown on live models in one of the windows. The popular Vocalion Records at 2s fid will bt played on a loud speaker. There I will be a Knitting Expert in attendance on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, giving in strrction to those taking up knitting, and in this connection Hay's are running a Knitting Competition, with prizes of one guinea. 7/6 and 2/6 respectively in two classes of Knitting. Then there is still time for Competitors to take part in the Needlework Competition, which closes on the 19th. Full particulars are obtainable at Hay’s.
