Work Done by Members of Parliament. MR V. WARD’S VIEWS. (Snecial to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON, August 12. Having reached the point of being disinterested because he is not seeking re-election, the views of Mr Vincent Ward (Invercargill) on the work of his colleagues in Parliament were of particular interest. Mr Ward remarked during the Financial debate that as it would be one of his last speeches in the House, he would like to say that the work of a member was so arduous that it took the whole of his time, and it was impossible for any member to carry out his official duties and attend to a business. lie was retiring because he realised he could not do two jobs. “ I do not think the people of this country realise the amount of work a member has to do in connection with the representation of his electorate.” Mr W. K. Parry (Labour. Auckland Central): Would you agree to a reduction in the number of members? Mr Ward: Yes, I am in favour of a reduction in the number, but I still contend that the people do not realise the amount of work which their representatives have to do. starting with comm i tees at ten o’clock and then sitting in the House late at night. Mr E. J. Howard (Labour, Christchurch South) : Halve the members and double the work. Mr Ward: No. Further development of the argument was interrupted by the dinner adjournment.
