GALE AT TROTS.
Glass Panel in Stand Smashed. Conditions at Addington to-day were at times almost indescribable. The wind swept over the course with the force of a full gale and it was difficult to walk against it. The gale was at its height shortly before the first race and there was a continuous stream of people across the enclosure in front of the tote chasing hats that had been swept away. The first race was run with the shutters still obscuring the front of the outside totalisator. it having been deemed unsafe to move them. The frame of a large glass panel in the outside stand was smashed with the force of the wind and glass and broken woodwork were scattered about. Dust and grit flying everywhere added to the. force of the wind in making things very unpleasant. Shortly after noon conditions moderated somewhat and the remainder of the day was more enjoyable in comparison with the earlier discomforts. DAMAGE AT RANGIORA. Glasshouse Collapses; Man Injured. Minor damage is reported from Rangiora and the surrounding district as the result of the north-west gale this morning. Fowl-houses, water tanks, wireless aerials and haystacks all suffered and the North Canterbury Power Board reported several poles were blown down and minor faults occurred in various parts of the district. A glasshouse in course of erection at River Road. Raneiora. collapsed and the owner, Mr J. E. Low, who was on the roof, sustained injuries necessitating his '•emoval to the Christchurch Hospital.
