FLIGHT UNLIKELY.
Captain White’s Attempt to Re-cross Alps. NOW AT HOKITIKA. Though Captain T. W. White intended to fly over the Southern Alps from Hokitika to Christchurch to-day, officials at Wigram Aerodrome do not hold out any prospect of his making the attempt, in view of the fierce gale. In order to flv over the Alps, Captain White would have to face the full force of the wind. Captain White has already crossed the Alps from Hawea Flat to Okuru, making the flight in the vicinity of the Haast Pass. This took him 75 minutes. He claims that he is the first aviator to have crossed the South Island from the Lakes District. At Okuru Captain White made fifteen short flights with passengers. When landing after the fifteenth the machine ran among tussock and part of the propeller was broken. A runway was cleared, temporary repairs to the propeller effected and a departure made for Hokitika at 3 p.m. Clear weather was experienced on the way up the coast. Guided by signal fires Cap tain White had no difficulty in making a landing at 5.15 p.m. on the beach where a large crowd had assembled.
