P.P.A. CRITICISM.

Appeals for Opposition to Government. DECISION OF CONFERENCE. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, August 10. An appeal to Protestants to oppose the present Government at the coming general election was embodied in a motion carried to-day at the Dominion conference of the Protestant Political Association. Mr L. A. Taylor, of Hawera, presided, and members of the Executive Council and delegates from all parts of New Zealand were present. It was stated in the resolution that the United Party had failed to uphold Imperial and Dominion responsibilities, and had neglected and opposed the rights of Protestants. The resolution condemned the Government’s failure to maintain adequate defence, and stated this would place an added burden on Great Britain. It was also stated that primage duty imposed by the Budget would result in decreased preference for Empire goods. Objection was taken to special privileges extended to the Roman Catholic Church in the direction of dental clinics and exemptions for priests and Marist Fathers and Brothers from payment of the unemployment levy. The resolution further contained reference to privileges provided for in the Nurses and Mid wives Registration Act, and to eulogistic references by Ministers of the Crown to sectarian schools, with a prejudicial effect on the State school system.
