Why is Sumner Dormant?

It Occurs to Me.

'JMIE VISITOR looking down on Sumner from the hills must wonder why there are so many vacant sections in a borough that could be made a veritable paradise. The view from the Sumner hills—from the top of Scarborough, for instance—is one that ought to attract tourists from all parts of the world. The panorama of beauty in landscape and seascape from the Heads to the Alps and the far Kaikouras is unsurpassed. And yet this bickering borough keeps the knowledge of the wonderful charm of the suburb to itself. The Mayor, however, has the right idea in building the sea-wall, for a promenade along the full length of the level waterfront in the bay would make the place much more attractive for residents and visitors. Sumner has all the natural assets of a seaside resort, and if the residents would but pull together, and add manmade facilities in the way of an extended esplanade and up-to-date bathing sheds, they would enhance the value of their own property, and their friends in the city, making fleeting visits of refreshment, would rise up and call them blessed.
