Splendid Combination between Farmers and Manufacturers.
STRIKING EVIDENCE of the combined efforts of primary and secondary producers was afforded in the many and splendidly arranged exhibits at the Winter Show, which was opened by the Prime Minister, the Rt Hon G. W. Forbes, on Saturday evening.

Spe tributes to the Canterbury Agr tion and the Canterbury Man combined efforts have made th The opening ceremony at the Winter Show was attended by a huge crowd, which filled all the available space between the platform on the north side of the building and the south wall. Mr Forbes and other speakers were introduced by Mr R. T. M’Millan (chairman of the show executive), who expressed great pleasure that the Prime Minister should disengage himself from his _ duties in Wellington to visit Christchurch and open the show. Mr M’Millan expressed the pleasure of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association and the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association at the large attendance of the public. Mr L. R. C. Macfarlane (president of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association) expressed great pleasure at the strong support accorded the show by the public. Such a large attendance was most gratifying to the promoters. The speaker was of opinion that from both the agricultural and the manufacturing sides the show was the best yet. Cc-operation Urged. Mr I. Woolf (president of the Manufacturers’ Association) urged co-opera-tion among industries and cultivation of national assets as the means of restoring the country to its former prosperty. Councillor E. R. M’Combs, who attended as the Mayor’s deputy, apologised for Mr Sullivan’s absence owing to another engagement. ' On behalf of the Christchurch City Council, the speaker congratulated the promoters of the show on the splendid display that had been assembled. “ The name of the manufacturers of Christchurch stands very high as the result of the splendid commodities which they place on the market,” said the Hon R. Masters, M.L.C., who congratulated the Winter Show authorities on the results of their work. He urged the public to support both the primary and the secondary industries of New Zealand. An expansion of the demand for New Zealand goods within New Zealand would have far-reaching effects on the prosperity of every resident. Mr Forbes Speaks. “ I knew that I was going to attend a good show when I left for Christchurch yesterday,” said Mr Forbes, “ for Christchurch has staged many good shows in the past. It is very pleasing to see this comprehensive display of Canterbury’s produce and manufactures at a time when conditions generally are very difficult. The show is a wonderful example of the improvement that is going on in our industries. that has been made in the manufactur-; ing industries in Christchurch since the | first show that I saw in this city,” con- ‘ eluded Mr Forbes, “ and, in declaring the show open, I wish the promoters i and the men of both primary and secondary industries every success.” ‘
