SUMNER BROWNIES CELEBRATE BIRTHDAY.

AWARDS PRESENTED FOR THE PAST YEAR.

Smiling faces, trim uniforms, alertness and contagious enthusiasm, interested guests and a gaily-coloured birthday party tea-table, marked the third anniversary of the Sumner Brownies. The programme included the presentation of membership stars and first and second-class badges, the “ flying-up ” ceremoify, the presentation of a magic mat by Mesdames W. 11. Nicholson and Otley. Following the grand salute in the Methodist Sunday Schoolroom, Mrs R. H. Henley (Tawny Owl) welcomed the guests and detailed the numerous qualifications for the various awards. The presentation of the first and thirdyear stars of the Brownies was made by the Provincial Secretary, Mrs Banks, of Opawa, as follows:—First year— Daphne Cook, Joyce Craw, Doris de la Roche, Marie Edmonds, Norma Fee, Phyllis Harvey, Thyra Hill, Pat Hill, Joyce Jerrard, Neroli M’Grath, Pam Mower, Gwyneth Otley, Reena Tombs and Marjorie Webb. Third year— Marian Duff, Lorrie Dawe, Yvonne Webb and Pat Ellison. The badges were presented by Miss M’Uwraith, District Commissioner of Canterbury, as follows:—First class— Lorrie Dawe, Marian Duff, Yvonne Webb, Thyra Hill, Marjorie Webb and Phyllis Harvey. A special attendance prize was awarded to Marian Duff by the Tawny Owl.

In the “ flying-up ” ceremony promotion to the Guides was gained by Marian Duff and Marjorie Webb, who were received by the Guides on special parade. Afternoon tea was served to the visitors, after which the Brownies sat down to their birthday table in the centre of which was an iced cake lit with three candles. These later were extinguished by a special Brownie method, while the chocolate Brown Owl was the first of the cake to receive the blade of the knife. The Mayor, Mr W. H. Nicholson, expressed his pleasure at the gathering by a welcome donation and Mrs Nicholson presented a money-box. Those present included the members of the Women’s Committee, Mesdames Nicholson, Fountain Barber, H. J. Marriner, Gray, H. G. Crawshaw, T. Cook, C. S. Booth and Miss Ettie Barber (Tawny Owl); Mesdames Dawe, Gurnsey, Lindop, Mower, Turner, G. F. Allen, R. N. C. Hill, Gale, Wallace, Graves, Webb, Tombs, Otley, Harvey, Jerrard, Craw, Ellison, Misses V. Webb, J. Row, and Messrs H. Buttle, G. F. Allen and the Rev T. A. Kent. An apology was received from the Guides captain, Mrs R. C. Smith. A song was contributed by Faith Gurnsey. The party concluded by pixies, gnomes, elves, fairies, sprites and guides singing the National Antfhem after a resolution of thanks from the guests, proposed by Mr G. F. Allen and seconded by the Rev T. A. Kent.
