SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

SUMNER DENTAL CLINIC. A card party was held in Haase’s Tea Rooms, Sumner, on Saturday evening in aid of the Sumner District High School dental clinic. There were nine tables of euchre players and one of bridge. The committee responsible were:—Mesdames Pye and T. Cook and Messrs J. Browne and 11. S. Ford. Those present were:—Mr and Mrs G. A. Alexander, Mr and Mrs Klingenstein, Mr and Mrs G. Jerrard, Mr and Mrs T. Cook, Mr and Mrs Thompson, Mr and Mrs F. Mathews, Mesdames W. 11. Nicholson, T. B. Boulton, E. Jerrard, T. Brake, E. Pye, Fountain Barber, Toombs, J. O. H. Newberry, Thompson, Maddock, F. Truscott and Unwin, Messrs 11. Barnet, W. Carter, J. O’Neil, J. Browne and 11. C. Ford, Misses E. Wilcox, B. Boulton, R. Boulton, G. Wilson, M. Reese and Stewart. Songs were sung by Mrs G. Jerrard, Miss E. Wilcox and Mr T. Cook. The prizes were won by Mrs Nicholson and Mr W. Carter and Miss Stewart and Mr Bowman. Redcliffs Hockey Club. A social and dance was given to the women’s teams by the men of the Redcliffs Hockey Club at Sumner on Saturday evening. The programme included games and dancing to music by Connor’s Redcliffs Orchestra. The men’s team presented a playette entitled “ The Man in the Bowler Hat.” Those present included: —Mr and Mrs H. P. Le Page, Mr and Mrs Pragnell, Mr and Mrs Mathews, Mesdames Olliver, Lonquet and Bates, Misses Grace Mortimer, Doreen Olliver, Gladys Bates, Noeline Bates, Fanny Peachey, Joyce Tooley, Ivy Willis, Dulcie Pye, Trixie Longuet and Rhona Bailey, Messrs 11. G. Bailey, Rogers, Wing, Stapley, Bates, Mathews, Vogan, Sutherland, Harper, Grafton, Thompson and Tutill. Farewell Social at Styx. The members of the Styx Presbyterian Church met at a social to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Blain and family who were leaving the district for Oxford. The Rev G. Wood, on behalf of the congregation, presented Mr and Mrs Blain with a dinner waggon. Reference to the good work done in the district by Mrs Blain was made by Mr and Mrs Shaw. Reference was also made to the good work done in the Sunday school by Miss Emily Blain, who was presented with a crystal perfume holder. Miss Blain, for acting as deputy teacher, was presented with a small clock. Refreshments were handed round. Bridge Party at Waikuku. Mrs Ronald Macdonald, Waikuku, was hostess at a flag bridge party at her residence on Thursday evening in aid of the Woodend Anglican Church funds, which benefited to the amount of £8 12s 6d. The prizes were won by Mrs T. Leech and Messrs A. Buckingham and J. Stokes, and a guessing competition by Miss A. Lynskey. Those present were:—Mr and Mrs G. March, Mr and Mrs W. Recently an enjoyable gift evening was given by Mrs Somerville, “ Dunsyre,” Buckley’s Road, in honour of the approaching marriage of Miss Elizabeth (Betty) Greechan. The rooms were decorated with pink and mauve streamers and bowls of narcissi. The evening was spent in games and competitions, the winners being Mrs Mulholland and Miss Eileen Johns. Humorous items were contributed by Messrs Roy Smith, Tom Somerville and 11. Brien.
