PURCHASE OF STORES ON GROUP SYSTEM.

ECONOMIES EXPECTED AT ASHBURTON HOSPITAL. (Special to the “ Star.’ ) ASHBURTON, August 10. At a meeting of the Ashburton Hospital Board to-day’, the chairman, Mr A. Horsey presided. The chairman of the Hospital committee (Mr F. Frampton) reported that in accordance with instructions from the Director-General of Health, the committee had investigated the whole question of the purchase of supplies, particularly with reference to the benefits to be obtained by group purchase with Christchurch as a group centre. It had been found from comparative prices that it would be more advantageous to purchase certain main lines and the committee recommended that three months prior to the end of the financial year, the secretary extract such lines as will not deteriorate from the contract, and report concerning purchase. This was agreed to. The receipts for the month amounted to £2840 the chief items being, levies and subisdies £2307 and patients fees £470. The principle items of expenditure were, maintenance £1286, outdoor relief £66, administration £99, other boards £309. Hospital Report. The Medical Superintendent reported that 78 patients (43 males and 35 females) had been admitted during the month of July, the total number treated being 127. Sixty-five were discharged leaving 57 in the institution at the end of the month. The returns of treatments etc., were as follow:—X-ray treatments 66, outpatients 173, outpatients treaments 348, laboratory reports 58, massage treatments 301, diathermy treatments 121, plaster cases 2. During the month 45 operations were performed. The Matron reported that Nurse Batchelor was on annual leave. Nurses Sim, Cripps and McFarlane had been successful in the first year’s examination. The reports from the Homes were as follow:—Malvern: Admitted 20, discharged 15. remaining 7; Methven: Admitted 2, discharged 4, none remaining. Rakaia: Admitted 6, discharged 4, remaining 2. It was reported that the ambulance had been out on eight occasions. One case of tuberculosis in the borough and two cases of scarlet fever, one at Rakaia and one at Tinwald, had been reported.
