TIMARU MAINTENANCE CASES ARE HEARD.

(Special to the “Star.”) TIMARU, August 6. When George William Furney applied to-day for variation of a maintenance order of 15s a week and remission of arrears amounting to £64 3s 3d, he was severely cross-examined by Senior-Sergeant Mathieson as to his relationship with a woman with whom he boarded. Under examination by the Magistrate Furney admitted that, even though he was contributing nothing to the support of his wife, from whom he was separated, and his two daughters, he was obtaining relief work at the married men’s rate. Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M., remarked that the unemployment officer would probably' have something to say about that. “I want the utmost candour about a matter before I make an order,” he added, in refusing the application. *T am informed that this young woman has plenty of money to go around in taxis and spend freely. The case has been adjourned four times already,” said Senior-Sergeant Mathieson, when Catherine Mary' D’Donoghue was proceeded against by the police on a complaint for maintenance of a near relative. Counsel said defendant’s father had died and since February' she had had only £lO from the estate and was subsisting on the small amounts that his office was able to grant her pending a court action for maintenance from the estate. T-he Magistrate adjourned the case for a week, stating that he would require all the particulars then.
