PERSONAL.
Messrs J. H. Simpson, 11. M. Buckleton, J. H. Forde, W. E. Reid, Robert Arlow, G. Prictor (Wellington), P. White (Melbourne) and J. H. Hill (Auckland) are amongst those staying at the United Service Hotel. Messrs T. G. Weir (Dunedin), J. R. Leggo (Nelson) and W. M’Taggart (Wanganui) are guests at W r arner’s Hotel. Colonel R. S. and J. Beere, Professor W. Hcwitson and Mr Rhodes Williams were passengers by this morning’s ferry steamer. Mr C. 11. Hunter, of Wellington, has been selected as the official Labour candidate for the Manawatu seat at the General Election. Mr Hunter is a young married man, and a native of Nelson, where he received his education. He is at present employed on the Wellington tramways. Mr S. B. Kershaw was appointed a member of the executive of the North Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Athletic, Cycling and Axemen’s Union, at its meeting last evening. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr N. L. Macbeth an old'member of the Philosophical Institute of was passed at a meeting of the institute last evening. Mr W, P. .Glue was appointed last evening to represent the Canterbury' Progress League at the conference of local bodies and other organisations to be held on August IS to discuss the future control of broadcasting in New Zealand. Mr J. E. Strachan was congratulated by the Canterbury Progress League last evening on his appointment as chairman of the New Zealand delegation to the Institute of Pacific Relations. It was decided to hold a farewell function before Mr Strachan’s departure for China at the end of September. Mr A. E. Loach, secretary of the Christchurch Savage Club, and of the Kindred Clubs’ Association of New Zealand, leaves to-night for Hawke’s Bay, where he will confer with the various Savage and Orphans’ Clubs concerning the disbursement of the funds subscribed by Kindred Clubs throughout New Zealand to assist them to repair the losses suffered in the February earthquake. He will return to Christchurch towards the end of next week. Congratulations to Mr P. R. Climie, organiser of the Canterbury Progress League, on his appointment to the Unemployment Board were extended at the meeting of the League last evening. A number of letters were received from local bodies adding their congratulations and various members spoke of Mr Climie’s outstanding capabilities for such a position. A committee consising of Messrs C. H. Clibborn, H. W. Heslop and M. W. Stevenson was set up to attend to the routine business of the League for two months during which time Mr Climie will be absent in Wellington on the business of the Unemployment Board. After that time Mr Climie will be required to visit Wellington only twice a month.
