MUCH PROGRESS MADE IN GLIDING AT HOME.
BIG COMPETITION TO BE HELD IN OCTOBER.
RUGBY, August 4. In flying circles, amateurs devoted to the new sport of gliding are alreadv looking forward to the international gliding competition to be held under the auspices of the British Gliding Association in the first week in October, while the international commission on motorless flight is in session in London. It is thought that the British entrants will be able to show that remarkable progress has been made in Biitisli gliding since the last international meeting in England, in 1922, and enthusiasts point to the new British duration record of six hours, set up by Flying-Officer I Mole, last week-end, as proof of the high standard reached. British firms have taken up the construction of gliders and are now producing highly efficient types. GRASSLAND RESEARCH ASSOCIATION FORMED. Per Press Association. PALMERSTON N.. August 6. The conference of officers of the Department of Agriculture and others interested in grassland research was re sumed this morning, when it was sdecided to form an association for the advancement of farming. Officers were elected as follows:—President, Mr A. 11. Cockayne: secretary and treasurer, Mr R. P. Connell; hon auditor, Mr C. H. Schwass; committee, Messrs A. W. Hudson, F. L. Scrivener and J. W. Hadfield. It was resolved that the first annual meeting be held at Lincoln College in December.
