OBITUARY.

GEORGE DEAN. The death occurred recently at Tai Tapu of Mr George Dean. The late Mr Dean was born at Mackfield, Cheshire, England, in 1845, and left for New Zealand with his parents in the ship Canterbury on June 17, 1851, arriving at Lyttelton in October of the same year. He settled with his parents at Purau about the time the late Mr Robert Rhodes’s homestead was being built and for whom he also worked in his young days At one time he ran a trading vessel between Lyttelton and Purau. He was a keen yachtsman and at one time sailed with success at the Lyttelton and Akaroa regattas. He was the designer of the well-known yacht Surprise and he witnessed the Sanders Cup contests every year until last season. The greater part of his life was spent at Purau. His wife, who predeceased him by forty-four years, was the second daughter of the late Mr William Veal, of Lyttelton. He is survived by a family of five, Messrs W. G. Dean (Tai Tapu), T. M. Dean (Purau) and B. Dean (Opawa), Mrs F. R. IT. Gardiner (Purau) and Mrs W. H. Oakley (Halkett). There are nineteen grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. The interment took place at the Addington Cemetery, the Rev Canon Bean officiating. The pall-bearers were Messrs lan Gardiner, Noel Dean, Walter Oakley (grandsons) and Arthur Gardiner. WALTER C. HELSDON. The friends of Mr W. C. ITelsdon will regret to hear of his death, which occurred at St Vincent Hospital, Sydney, on July 28, after an operation. Mr Helsdon, who was forty-four years of age at the time of his death, was well .known in theatrical circles. The interment took place on July 30 at Rookwood cemetery, New South Wales. Mr Helsdon leaves a widow and a little daughter.
