“ HIT AND RUN ” CYCLIST INJURES YOUNG WOMAN. (Special to the “Star.”) ASHBURTON, August 4. After lying unconscious for about an hour and a half in Cass Street, Miss Nellie Hoatten was picked up by a girl friend on Sunday night. Miss Hoatten was walking along the street when she was struck by an unlighted C3'de ridden by a man. The cyclist was apparently one of the “ hit-and-run ” variet} r , as he did not render
The girl soon recovered and was able to proceed to her home. Mr William Howell, an old man, was admitted to the Ashburton Public Hospital suffering from a comminuted fracture of the right shoulder and a fracture of the right pelvis, while there was a large wound on the right his head, as a result of a horse which he was driving suddenly plunging and capsizing the cart into a small ditch. The accident happened at the corner of Suffolk and Oxford Streets. His condition is rejjorted to be serious. Mr F. S. Pluck, a married man, aged forty-two, suffered painful injuries to his foot when he was felling trees at the Lauriston schoolhouse. The axe he was using slipped and struck his foot, severing a tendon. Mr Pluck was admitted to the Ashburton Public Hospital, where he is making good progress. Allenton School Committee.
At a meeting of the Allenton School Committee there were present: Messrs E. C. Bathurst (chairman), C. Maynard, E. N. Tohnson, 11. Rollinson, G. Harris, 11. Greaves, D. 11. Moore, J. M’Elhinne.y, 11. Breach and the head master (Mr E. S. Chambers). The head master reported that the number on the roll last month was 244. The present roll was 245, with an average attendance of 219, or 90 per cent. The boys had won the senior and junior football banners in the competition conducted by the Mid-Canterbury Public School Athletic Association. The girls were runners-up in the B grade basket-ball competition. In the football matches against South Canterbury, six junior boys and four senior boys gained representative honours, also two girls in basket-ball teams. It was decided not to hold an excursion to the Christchurch Winter Show this jear. The chairman reported that arrangements had been made to hold an Arbor Day next Friday at 2.15 p.m. Mr Millichamp had agreed to give a short address to the children and parents. Messrs 11. Breach and C. Maynard were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month.
