OBJECTION MADE TO NOISE AFTER DANCES.
RESIDENTS COMPLAIN OF BEING IGNORED.
At last night’s meeting of the Waimairi County Council a letter was received from Mr W. H. Benson complaining of lack of courtesy by the council in not replying to complaints regarding the parking of cars in the vicinity of St Barnabas schoolroom. The letter further stated “ that unless you (the council) are prepared to give us the reasonable protection required, we shall be reluctantly compelled to use the legal remedy without further delay.”
The first letter from Mr Benson, on behalf of a petition, complained of the roaring of engines, crashing of gears and tooting of horns and shouting when the dance patrons were leaving St Barnabas Hall at a late hour. The following reply of the County Clerk (Mr G. S. Cowper) was read and approved:—
\our complaint was brought before the notice of persons attending the dance. A request was made from the platform that those present make as little noise as possible when leaving in respect to starting motors and to refrain from laughing and calling out. A copy of 3 r our complaints were forwarded to the church authorities. It has also been arranged that on nights when a dance is held that the traffic inspector will be in attendance to arrange that cars are parked on one side of the street only; also that gate-ways be kept clear. In respect to the licensing of the schoolroom, I have to state that it is not subject to the necessity of procuring a license to be used for dancing.” In regard to the complaint of lack of courtesy in not replying earlier, a satisfactor\' reply was given. Mr Gardner said that the complaint was imreasonable. The social life of the community must go on. Dancing was but a usual social custom.
Mr Cross: The hall was there long before the houses.
