UNEMPLOYED IMPROVE ISLEWORTH SETTLEMENT (Special to the “Star.”) ASHBURTON, July 12. The benefit to be derived from the draining of the Isleworth Settlement by unemployed is already noticeable. About three miles of the main drain leading to the sea has been deepened, and a large quantity of water which had been lying on the marshy land, on account of the drains being neglected, is disappearing. As full a gang of then as possible is being kept employed on this useful work, which will provfe of inestimable value to occupiers of land oil the settlement. New Bridge Approaches. The work of erecting the fences on the approaches td the new traffic bridge will be commenced immediately. The successful tenderers for the fences, which will be built of wood, were Messrs Roffey and Colville, of Timvald Guides’ Birthday Celebrated. The third birthday of the second Ashburton Company of Girl Guides was celebrated with a party in St Stephen’s Hall. At the enrolment ceremony, the District Commissioner (Mrs G. L. Harold) enrolled seven Guides. Among those present were members of the Ashburton branch of the Girl Guides Association, the company’s committee. First Company Guides, Rokeby Guides, Rangers, and St Ste-
