THIEVES ACTIVE IN FITZGERALD AVENUE.

TWO SHOPS ENTERED: TOBACCONIST SUFFERS.

Thieves visited two adjoining shops in Fitzgerald Avenue during the weekend. Both were lock-up shops, one bein£ a tobacconist’s, occupied by Mr J. Smith, at 87a, Fitzgerald Avenue, and the other a fish-shop, occupied bv Mr D. Beaver. The door of Mr Smith’s shop was forced, and a clean sweep was made of the stock. All the barbering outfit in the shop was also taken, and Mr Smith estimates his loss at about £2O. The only money in the shop was 2sd, which was not taken. Mr Smith’s shop was entered last May, when stock valued at £26 \vq.s taken. A window was forced at the back of the fish-shop. There was no money in the premises except about £l, which was in the shilling-in-the-slot gas meter. This was forced and the money taken. Craj’fish and other stock was not touched.

BURGLARS ROB TILL OF £4 IN KAIKOURA SHOP

An unsuccessful attempt to blow open a safe on the premises of Mr F. H. Flower, a storekeeper at Kaikoura, was made by burglars on Saturday night. The thieves gained an entrance to the store by forcing open a window at the side of the shop, but were unable to make an impression on the safe. They stole £4 in cash, which had been left lying in the till.

When Mr Flower came into the shop on Sunday morning, he found signs of the burglars’ activities and informed the police.
