WEEK-END WAS ONE OF FROSTS.

THIS MORNING NOT SO COLD AS YESTERDAY

Christchurch experienced a very cold week-end. On Saturday morning there were 12.7 degrees of frost, yesterday morning there were 13.7 degrees, and this morning 11.0 degrees. In shady places the surface of the ground has been frozen all the time. The frosts have started early in the morning and continued till late in the morning. The long duration of the frosts has made them very noticeable, and has given the impression that they were more severe than the readings showed. As soon as the temperature falls below a certain point conditions become unpleasant, but as far as human comfort is concerned it is more a question of how long it remains below that value rather than by how much below it the temperature falls. It is because the temperature was so low for so long a period that the last three nights have seemed so intensely cold. Yesterday was a beautifully fine, sunny day, and this morning was bright and pleasant. Frosts of ten degrees or more so far this winter have been:— Degrees.
