CANVASS MADE IN ST ALBANS DISTRICT.
COLLECTION OF GOODS FOR POUND SCHEME
A meeting of the general committee of the pound scheme was held in St Matthew’s schoolroom, St Albans, last evening to further the interests of the project. Mr A. Wallace occupied the chair. The secretary, Mr 11. A. Jarden. reported that the church officers of St Matthew’s had placpd the use of the schoolroom at the disposal of the Pound Scheme Committee free of charge and that forty notebooks and a minute book had been donated by the United Bookstall Company. During the week thirty-four women and men had made a door-to-door canvass of the district, with splendid results. Twenty-six depots had been appointed in various parts of the district. On Saturday morning 100 boys will collect goods and take them to the depots.
Mr Jarden also made appreciative reference to the hearty co-operation the scheme was receiving from every clergyman in the district. Canvassers reported that several persons. apparentlv in comfortable circumstances, declined to give anything, also some bad cases of distress.
The committee is in need of urgent help from persons who have motorcars. Any who can help are asked to communicate with the secretary. 1070, Colombo Street (near Edgeware Road).
It was decided to hold the next meeting on Thursday next at 7.30 p.m. A suggestion was made that men who are unemployed or are doing relief work on two or three days each week be invited to assist in the collection of goods.
