WESTPORT NEWS. (Special to the “ Star.”) WESTPORT, June 25. The Hospital Board’s reply to an inquiry from the Minister of Health •was:—“Distress at Millerton: Twentyone cases with 100 dependents receiving relief. The mine is now working. Further relief is probably not needed. Primary cause is slackness of trade in coal. Some were relieved among those who refused employment. Board debated the matter and concluded women and children should not be penalised by dictates of Miners’ Union.” Personal. The Hon W. 11. M’lntyre has left for Wellington to resume Parliamentary duties. Mr 11. G. Holland, private secretary to Mr H. E. Holland, M.P., left by the Komata for Wellington. Messrs W. Hart, M. Delaney and M. O’Dea are accompanying the Buller hockey representative team to Christchurch. Mrs Holder, of the Criterion Hotel, is an inmate of the Buller Hospital. Miss Agnes Holland, daughter of Mr H. E. Holland, M.P., has left for Hokitika, accompanied by her mother and Miss Jean Smith. Her marriage to Mr J. D. Forman takes place at Hokitika on Monday next. A wedding of interest to Buller residents took place in Wellington when Miss Nance M’Padden was married to Mr E. Norris, of the Loop Line Road. PROGRESS LEAGUE HAS MEETING AT WESTPORT. (Special to the “ Star.”) WESTPORT, June 25. The Buller Progress League met In the Town Hall, Mr J. M. Robertson presiding. A letter from Miss Morris, of Maruia, regarding the accommodation and intended improvements at the Maruia Springs, was received. A resolution of sympathy with the widow and family of the late Mr N. W. Parker was passed, all present standing. Mr T. Fairhall’s resignation as secretary was accepted with regret and appreciation of»his services was expressed. Mr A. W. Stevens was appointed secretary pro tem. A letter was received from the Canterbury League asking support of their representations that single men be employed on the Lewis Pass Road construction, as there was difficulty in getting married men into isolated places. »It was resolved to co-operate in the matter. Mr Han Moloney reported that special cars of seven passengers could be arranged for the trip from Westport to Blenheim to connect with the ferry steamer.
JMr Betts reported that the Public orks Department engineer was re- | porting on the river erosion. Members I considered it was time something was ! done, as the danger was a menace to I the town. I In answer to Mr Parfitt, who asked : why there was no report on the coal question, Mr Betts said the league had made representations to the Government in favour of using New Zealand coal only. The league had tried to get big liners to Wesport for bunker coal and witli success, but now the vessels were not calling. He was told that they could not get quick despatch. Mr Parfitt and Mr Enright said it was the question of exchange, which was 4s in the £. Mr Skilton raised the question of developing the pakihi lands and moved that the league ask the assistance of Mr H. E. Holland, M.P., in getting the Government to place a grant on the estimates for the experimental plots. The president spoke in support of the motion, which was carried. GREYMOUTH GOLF CLUB. Adams) has received advice from the various bowling clubs in the Buller district that they are withdrawing their affiliation from the West Coast Bowling Centre. A skating carnival was held in M’Kane’s Hall, Cobden, last night. .The Hockey Cup competition game, Athletics v. Cullen and P. J. Smith. Potato race, D. Greaney. Greymouth Waterslders’ Union. The annual election of officers for the Greymouth Watersiders’ Union takes Place on Thursday next. Mr C. Fraser is re-elected unopposed for the vicepresidency, Messrs J. M'Ginley and J. Jackson have been nominated. For the position of secretary, three have been nominated—Mr E. Hillman (present secretary), H. Kirk (past secretary) and P. M’Donald. Timber Trade Suffers. The timber industry on the Coast, which has been passing through slack times for many months past, shows no signs of improvement. Out of close on ninety mills which were operating on the Coast, only fifteen are now working most of these being on part time. The adverse exchange with Australia has seriously interfered with the white pine trade, and those mills which have been endeavouring to keep going and have done so up to now contemplate closing down. Two mills closed down this week. An indication of the number of unemployed in the timber industry was shown by the number of applications received by a local miller who was advertising for two bushmen.
