FINE OF £SO ON GAMING CHARGE.
BETTING CARDS HIDDEN BEHIND SECRET PANEL. Pleading guilty to a charge of using his premises at 115, Manchester Street, as a common gaming house, William George Everitt, a hairdresser, was today fined £SO and costs by Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M. Chief-Detective Carroll said that the accused had been suspected of bookmaking, and for some time the premises had been under observation. On Saturda}’, Detective-Sergeant Young and Detective Halcrow visited the premises and found accused in an office at the rear of the saloon. Betting paraphernalia was found in the office, and a search revealed a secret panel which concealed a quantity of betting material. Altogether £66 worth of bets were recorded, most of them being on Saturday’s races at Timaru. The accused had no previous conviction.
