Fortune Telling.

To the Editor. Dear Sir,—ln publishing a report of how a fortune-teller terrified a young girl to such an extent that she thought Christchurch had been destroyed by an earthquake, you draw attention to a very prevalent evil—that of fortune telling. It is hard to imagine that in this year, 1931, there are still those who swallow the bunk and drivel attached to spiritualism and prophesying the future. Yet I personally know of a prosperous business man in this town who, only some weeks ago, visited a woman who professionally practises the “art” of fortune telling. Then again, some two weeks ago, I went to a meeting in town here just to see how far the human leg can be pulled. The “ prophet ” in charge of the business gave a tolerably fair lecture, and then, descending from his rostrum, he sat at his table, tuned in on the spirit world, and opening written questions left on the table, he proceeded to diagnose physical complaints, forecast happenings to individuals and arrange meetings between long-lost lovers. One woman he sent home with the comforting news that there would be two deaths in her family! Sir, these charlatans are in business for profit. . And it would be a good thing if this spiritualism-cum-fortune-telhng could be stamped out for good. It is all bunk. Fortune telling, which is an offshoot of spiritualism is, like spook-chasing, scientifically impossible. There never has been a spirit heard or seen. There never has been a fortune truthfully told. Those who believe in any of this rot are the poor victims of their own imagination.—l am, etc., MATERIALIST.
